The Difference between Gratitude and Thankfulness

What is the Difference between Thankfulness and Gratitude?

Life can be difficult sometimes, causing us to lose faith in ourselves or in others. However, it can make a world of difference for us and our attitude when someone goes out of their way to be kind to us. Whether this is a friend or family member taking the time to visit with us and listen, or a stranger in front of us in a drive-thru line who pays for our order. As others are kind to us, that leads us to be thankful…or grateful. What is the difference between gratitude and thankfulness? We are Murk Resource and today we would like to discuss the importance of and difference between thankfulness and gratitude.

Thankful vs. Grateful: What’s the Difference?

Many people use these two phrases interchangeably, not realizing there is a difference between them. The main difference is pretty simple. Thankful means to feel relieved or pleased, while grateful means to show thanks for something someone has done for you. Simply put, thankfulness is a feeling while gratitude is an action.

How Thankfulness Relates to Gratitude

While it is good to be thankful, it is a much more temporary feeling than gratitude. Thankfulness lasts for a moment, such as being thankful when a loved one makes you dinner. You are both thankful for their kindness as well as for the food itself. However, once you have eaten the meal and cleared the table, this particular feeling of thankfulness will fade. Gratitude is more than just a feeling, it is a mindset and is more permanent. If you are truly grateful for the fact that the person who made you this meal is in your life, you will do more than simply thank them for making the meal, but that is a good start. Thankfulness is a small part of the bigger picture of gratitude. If you are grateful for someone, you won’t simply say “thank you”, you will show them every day that you are grateful through your actions. Taking care of them when they’re sick, surprising them with a gift, listening to them when they need to vent, making them laugh. Gratitude is a way of being and can be shown through words, actions, and our attitude towards something or someone.

Why is it Important to be Grateful?

It is no bad thing to be grateful for the people and experiences in our lives. According to research done by Berkeley University, more grateful people tend to sleep better and feel healthier. Choosing to live with gratitude allows us to improve our relationship with ourselves, with other people, and even with the world at large. A highly recommended and popular practice is to keep a gratitude journal where you spend about 15 minutes each day writing down five or more things that you are grateful for. Doing this on a daily basis helps you to practice being grateful so that it becomes a part of your daily life and your state of being. Being thankful is a feeling, but being grateful is a choice, and one you should choose to make.

What is the Best Way to Live without Judgment?

How to Live Freely without Judgment

We all catch ourselves judging other people at times, although some do it much more than others. Whether it’s the way a person looks, the things they say, or the things that they choose to do, we find ourselves critiquing other people for their shortcomings or the ways that they differ from us and our beliefs. Oftentimes we even judge others for their words or actions that are not so different from our own, but what does this judgment get us? The only people that we can truly control is ourselves, so no amount of judgment will cause others to change. The more that we can try to live our lives with no judgment, the freer and better we will feel. We are Murk Resource and today we would like to discuss the best ways to live life with no judgment.

Use Mindfulness to Check Yourself

Letting go of judgment can be challenging and even scary at times, but it often clouds our minds and prevents us from having authentic connection with ourselves and those around us. Mindfulness is one of the best ways to start freeing yourself from judgment. Mindfulness is helpful in identifying your strengths, but also in identifying your judgments and weaknesses. Using mindfulness to become more aware of our thoughts and feelings allows us to analyze them more closely and be more in tune with our mind. Therefore, you can become more mindful of your judgments by noticing them when they first cross your mind. Once you are aware of your judgments, you can more actively work towards silencing that judgment. This doesn’t mean that you have to accept all of the things that you would normally judge, especially things that go against your personal values, it just means that you will be able to accept things with less of an emotional response.

Mindfulness in Action

For example, let’s say that you are very against smoking cigarettes and you often find yourself thinking less of people who smoke and finding it gross to smell the scent of tobacco or see people litter their butts on the ground. Normally, this might make you respond emotionally and judge them out of anger, frustration, or disgust. However, if you practice mindfulness and start to check yourself as these thoughts fill your head, you can begin to let them go and approach the situation differently. Instead of getting emotional and judging them, you can just observe the fact that they are smoking and choose to let them live their lives, even though they are making decisions that you wouldn’t make yourself. And while you are no longer judging them, you don’t have to accept their use of tobacco smoke either; you can avoid walking close to them so that you don’t have to smell it, and just continue on with your life.

The Power of Different Opinions

Judgmental people usually don’t have inner peace of their own. When we let judgment influence our decisions too much, it can be very constricting and limiting. Judgment does not allow much room for change, and when you judge anyone who thinks or acts differently than you, that only allows there to be one answer to every issue in life. Respecting your own opinions as well as those of other people is hugely important to freeing yourself from judgment. If you are constantly pushing your ideas and beliefs on others, then you are allowing your strict judgments to control your life. Even if someone else’s opinion or way of life differs from yours, you will find more inner peace by projecting outer peace; by not being so emotional and judgmental towards others you will in turn be living more freely internally.

Remember that Nobody is Perfect

As we mentioned, living judgmentally is to live thinking that there is only one answer to everything. The truth is, nobody is perfect and we cannot measure everyone to a conceived idea of perfection and judge them when they fall short. The different opinions that people have might lead them to think or act in a way that they think is more beneficial for their life, while it might be conflicting with your own views or ways of life. That is okay! Everyone makes mistakes and everyone is entitled to their own opinions. One trick is to catch yourself every time you are about to judge someone and think of an imperfection or flaw of your own that is equivalent. This exercise can be humbling, but it allows us to not be as judgmental and live a more peaceful life.

For example, let’s say that you are judging someone for eating too much junk food that is bad for their body. Perhaps recently you consumed a lot of alcohol, which is also really bad for your body. While these things aren’t the same, they are equivalent imperfections, and as you consider your own choice of consuming something unhealthy, it might humble you into not judging someone else for their choice to consume something unhealthy. The roles can be reversed too. If you find that you are judging yourself, remember that other people aren’t perfect either and you might be less inclined to judge yourself.

How Does Assessing Your Strengths Play a Role in Your Success?

Assessing Your Strengths Can Play a Part in Having a Successful Week

Success is an interesting concept that can be defined in different ways. Ultimately, success is defined as the accomplishment of a goal or purpose. However, in our society the lines can be blurred between what is success and what we think success should be, especially when in comparison to others. As individuals, however, we define and control our own successes. If we think of it simply as a means of accomplishing a goal, then we need to consider that in order to find success we need to set realistic goals for ourselves that we know we can achieve. One of the key elements of achieving a goal is to identify our strengths, become more mindful of them, and then to assess how those strengths can be used to help us find success. We are Murk Resource and today we would like to discuss how assessing your strengths can set you up for a successful week.

Identifying Your Strengths

Not all strengths are easy to identify. Keeping an open mind as to what you consider a strength will help you to realize that you have more than you might think. Your relationships with other people and even yourself might include strengths just as much so as your talents, abilities, and skills. Be open to feedback about your strengths from other people too. Sometimes others can see more than we realize and they might be able to help you identify strengths that they have noticed about you.

The Benefits of Writing down Your Strengths

Writing anything down can be a helpful tool. When you write something down, it can help keep you motivated, it allows you to think at a higher level about that thing, and it can help you recognize the process of your own emotions and the pathway to achieving your goals. The same goes for your strengths. Writing your strengths down on paper can help to reiterate them in your brain and it can give you reassurance that you have those strengths.

Thinking Mindfully About Your Strengths

Once you have identified your strengths and begun writing them down regularly, you will be in a better state of mind. There are even health benefits of positive thinking, so not only will it help you to achieve your goals, but it could even help you to live a longer and healthier life! As you begin to think more mindfully about your strengths you can begin to assess them in your head and determine how to best utilize these strengths in order to achieve the realistic goals that you have set for yourself. Think about how you can incorporate these strengths into your daily life and the day-to-day activities that you do.

For example, if your goal is to have a better attitude at work, perhaps you (or others) have identified patience as a strength of yours. Let’s say you deal with customers at work, you can start to take a deep breath and smile and exemplify more patience when dealing with a difficult customer. This will lead to you having a better attitude overall and will help you to achieve the realistic goal that you set out for yourself of having a better attitude at work.

Reflecting on a Successful Week

One of the secrets to setting goals is to set many smaller goals. Even if you have one larger goal, such as losing 100 pounds, you can set smaller goals every week, such as losing 5 pounds, and even smaller daily goals of exercising for 30 minutes and avoiding junk food. Whatever your goal is, using these smaller goals as stepping stones to the end goal is a very helpful practice.

It is important to remember that success doesn’t happen all at once. You won’t lose 100 pounds overnight, so it is important to find smaller successes throughout the week by using your strengths to your advantage. After a successful week or accomplishing goals, you should think back and reflect on that week. Think positively. Write down your emotions. Rewrite your strengths. Set new goals. Find new ways to use your strengths. You can achieve anything that you set your mind to and change your life just by identifying and assessing your strengths!

5 Tips for Achieving Your Goals in 2022

How Can You Achieve Your Goals this Year?

Believing that you can achieve your goals requires you to first convince yourself that you can. People are often their own worst critics or their own biggest doubters, questioning their own abilities to do things and accomplish goals. If you end up in this negative state of mind and convince yourself that you can’t do something, how can you possibly achieve that goal? Once you convince yourself that you can’t, you will likely give up and never even try. But if you convince yourself that you can, you might surprise yourself. Eleanor Murkey is a dynamic certified life coach who teaches self-empowerment by helping people to convince themselves that they can achieve their goals.

What Kind of Goals Should You Set?

In reality, there are no goals that you should decide are out of your reach. As an example, earlier this month Erin Jackson won an Olympic gold medal for Team USA in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. She had only started ice skating about five years earlier in 2016. While it may have seemed crazy if she had said I want to win an Olympic gold medal in this event one day, that is exactly what happened five years later. But, it didn’t happen overnight nor with a single goal. In order to achieve your bigger end goals, it helps to set a series of smaller goals. What will you accomplish this year – this month – this week – today – this hour? These smaller goals should be realistic and attainable. You can allow them to build on one another, like small steps that form a staircase up towards your end goal.

Here are five helpful tips to keep you on track with achieving your goals this year.

1) Write Your Goals Down

It all starts with a few words on a page. This is what I want to accomplish. If you write it down more frequently and reread it, it will engrain in your mind. This will also help to give you clarity on exactly what your goal is.

2) Take Immediate Action

Saying that you will start tomorrow or soon might lead to you never getting started. Don’t put your goals off, instead take immediate action. Even if it’s a very small step, even a small step in the right direction is progress towards your goal. At Murk Resource, Inc. we offer Murk Programs that teach you how to take ownership of your own life.

3) Be Ready to Fail

Failure is inevitable in life and we all experience it. When you plan for it and can embrace it when it comes, you will feel more empowered and equipped to overcome it. Regroup, focus, and get yourself back on track when obstacles get in the way.

4) Hold Yourself Accountable

Don’t make excuses or go too easy on yourself. Nobody else wants you to achieve your goals as much as you want to, so don’t depend on them to hold you accountable. Depend on yourself, and be someone that you can depend on.

5) Seek Out Help

While ultimately you need to be able to depend on yourself, that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to seek out help from others. Coaches, teachers, mentors, friends, family, or coworkers can be hugely important for your success. Nobody accomplishes anything entirely alone. While it’s important not to depend entirely on others, it is also important not to see seeking help as a failure or a weakness, but to instead think of it as a positive resource used to help work towards the goal.

How to Start a Consulting Business: 3 Steps to Finding Your Idea

Would you like to start a consulting business, but aren’t exactly sure where to start?

Step 2: Determine the industries you would like to work with
